A New (like, you know, more or less) DESCOPE!
by E "Eddy" Edwards
Taking our cue from the themed entertainment design and development racket as a whole, we felt is was more than about time for a complete and total overhaul of . . .
Themed Entertainment Design and Development!
Aw! 2008! A year of rebirth and renewal, a year of "becoming" (usually a good thing) and, more significantly, of "not becoming" Polar opposites? Nay! As the aging hipster-wanna-bes still (alas) say, "It's all goooood."
Becoming:
DCA actually becoming a theme park! Not Becoming:
Six Flags not becoming America's foremost supplier of land for condos (at least in So-Cal, at leasr for now).Becoming:
The "entertainment" wing of the Themed Entertainment Design and Development racket becoming again focused on designing and paying for projects that will result in attractions (and etc.) that are overtly "entertaining" without fear of having to explain things to their
museum-y clients.Not Becoming:
The "entertainment" wing of the Themed Entertainment Design and Development racket not becoming a "those who don't remember the past are doomed to relive it" clone of the late 1980's.Becoming:
The "museum-y" wing of the Themed Entertainment Design and Development racket finally becoming less worried about what a passel of second string old-guard museum wonks think and start really believing that the success of some "high profile" museums — even the, uh, "alternative" ones — is due to the fact that . . .
A.) people like to have their basic human needs met (i.e., they don't wanna be bored to freaking DEATH) and
2.) that the exact same audience that likes to chow down on churros while waiting in line for the "Glen or Glenda" dark ride before they dash off to get good seats for the "Plan 9 From Outer Space Wild West Midget Stunt-o-Rama Show"* are the same audience, believe it (and like it) or not.
Not Becoming:
The "museum-y" wing of the Themed Entertainment Design and Developement racket not becoming too much like the worst fears of some old-guard museum wonks and pushing for whiz-bang where none is needed.Becoming:
DeScope becoming a regular (-ish) publication again. Not Becoming:
DeScope not becoming yet another "too damned full of itself for words" Legend of Bloggy Creek kinda thing (whatever the hell that means).
I could go on, but as I can't think of any other Becoming and not things to list, I'll just assumed that I've beaten this vague idea into the ground enough to let it go. For now, anyway.
But . . .
As before, DeScope is gonna need you, the dedicated readers, to lend a content (but rarely contented) hand by supplying us with . . . content:
Words (nomenclature, observations, theme park hacking tips, rumors, and like that)We'll be watching for you at the egress!Pictures (photos, sketches, Rorschach inkblots, etc.)
Audio and /or video
Links to like-minded online stuff
And anything else that you think might be nifty here on the oh, so refined digital pages of DeScope.
* Not bad ideas, now that I think of it. Might be able to wrngle a dinner meeting or two off of these next November . . .
